Security for Northcliff homes on the ridge

Northcliff's homes are built around one of the highest hills in Johannesburg. Steep stands, several garden levels and long sloping walls change how cameras, fences and gates have to be set up.

Short answer

DBS Security installs CCTV, electric fencing and gate motors for homes on Northcliff Ridge and in neighbouring Blackheath, Fairland, Cresta and Berario, and supplies guards for streets with an approved boom. The family-run, PSIRA-registered company (468853) is based in Horizon View, Roodepoort. Owners Pieter and Marco de Bruyn walk the property and quote every job.

What Northcliff properties need most

Every property is different. These are the layers we're asked about most in Northcliff, and why.

CCTV installation

Homes on the ridge are often built over several levels. A camera at the gate doesn't see the lower garden, the terraces or the back boundary, so camera placement needs planning on site.

Electric fencing

On a steep stand the boundary wall steps up and down the hill. The fence has to follow every step without leaving gaps, and zoning tells you which section was touched.

Gate motors

Sloping driveways are common on the ridge. The motor, track and safety beams need to be chosen and set up for the slope and the weight of the gate.

Estate security

Some Northcliff streets are secured with resident-run booms. Guarding at an approved access point has to follow the City's Security Access Restriction conditions.

Northcliff sits on the ridge, and that shapes everything

Northcliff was established in 1934 on part of the old farm Waterval and named after its ridge. Northcliff Hill, also known as Aasvoëlkop, rises to about 1,807 metres, the second-highest point in Johannesburg after Observatory Ridge. The suburb's large homes are built around the steep slopes of that hill, with views to the north and south, and the Northcliff Ridge Ecopark on top.

That terrain is a big part of Northcliff's appeal. It is also why a standard security quote often doesn't fit. A flat suburban stand can be covered by a fence on the wall, a motor on the gate and a few cameras. A Northcliff property might have a driveway that climbs from the street, a house on two or three levels, terraced gardens and a back wall far below the house that nobody can see from inside. Each of those needs its own thought.

Big homes on steep stands

On a sloping property, the parts you can't see from the house are the parts that need covering. We walk the whole property before we suggest anything, usually from the bottom boundary up, and plan around three questions:

  • What can each camera actually see? A camera mounted high on the house looks down over the terraces but can miss the foot of a retaining wall. On ridge properties, a camera at the lower boundary looking back up the garden often makes sense, with infrared or lighting so the night picture is usable. See CCTV installation.
  • Where do the alarm zones start? Outdoor beams on each garden level mean the alarm can tell you where someone is, not only that something triggered. Inside the house, splitting the alarm into zones by floor lets you arm the downstairs at night while you're upstairs. See alarm systems.
  • Does the fence follow the wall? Boundary walls on steep stands step up and down. An electric fence has to follow every step and corner without gaps where the wall changes height, and zoning by section shows which part of a long boundary was touched.

Link the cameras and alarm to 24-hour off-site monitoring, and someone is watching the lower garden when you can't.

Gates and driveways on a slope

On a hill like this, plenty of driveways climb or drop from the street. A gate motor on a sloping driveway needs more care than one on a flat one: the gate has to run true on its track, the motor has to suit the gate's weight, and the safety beams have to be set at the right height for a car that's on an incline.

Battery backup matters too. A heavy gate that won't open during a power cut leaves you waiting in the street or pushing it by hand. We check the battery and the charger as part of every gate job, and we look at a garage door motor if you still have to get out of the car at the top of the driveway.

Already have a motor? Tell Marco the make and send a photo of the gate and driveway. He'll tell you straight whether it's one we work on.

Boomed streets and residents' associations

Some Northcliff streets have been secured with boom gates by residents. In Johannesburg, a closure or access restriction on a public road is governed by the City's Security Access Restriction (SAR) Policy of 2018. In May 2026 the City's Transport Department reminded residents that applications must be approved before any installation work starts, and that approved closures must stick to the conditions attached to them.

If your association has, or is applying for, an approved access point, we can quote the parts that are ours to do:

  • Guards at the boom, working to an access procedure that fits the City's approval conditions. See estate security.
  • Cameras at the access point that capture vehicles and faces clearly, day and night.
  • Criminal background checks on guards and contractors who will have access to the street.

Send us the City's approval and its conditions with your enquiry, so our quote matches what the City has allowed.

FAQ Questions we get

Security in Northcliff: questions people ask

Something else on your mind? WhatsApp Marco or call the office on 011 768 0400.

Which parts of Northcliff do you cover?

All of Northcliff, on and around the ridge, plus nearby Blackheath, Fairland, Cresta, Berario, Linden, Darrenwood, Montgomery Park and Victory Park. Our office is in Horizon View, Roodepoort, west of Northcliff. If your suburb isn't listed, WhatsApp Marco and ask.

Our street has a boom. Can you supply guards for it?

Yes, if the closure is approved by the City of Johannesburg under its Security Access Restriction Policy. Send us the approval and its conditions, and we'll quote guards, an access procedure and cameras that fit them. We can't help put up a boom that the City hasn't approved.

How many cameras does a large house on the ridge need?

There's no fixed number. It depends on how many levels the property has, where the blind spots are and what you want watched. We walk the property from the bottom boundary up, then quote the cameras that cover what you can't see from the house.

Can a gate motor handle a steep driveway?

Yes, if the motor suits the gate's weight and the gate, track and safety beams are set up properly for the slope. Send Marco a photo of the gate and driveway and the make of any existing motor, and he'll tell you what's needed.
