Who we are
This website is run by De Bruyn Security (Pty) Ltd, trading as DBS Security. Company registration 2016/268225/07, PSIRA 468853. Our office is at Unit 5, Medgate Centre, Cnr Kingfisher & Pheasant Streets, Horizon View, Roodepoort, Gauteng.
In this policy, "we", "us" and "our" mean De Bruyn Security (Pty) Ltd. Under POPIA we are the "responsible party" for the personal information described here.
Our Information Officer
Our Information Officer is our managing owner. For any privacy question or request, call the office on 011 768 0400, use the email address on our contact page, or write to us at the office address above. Please mark it "Privacy request".
What we collect
When you ask for a quote on this website
- The services you're interested in, the type of property, and your suburb or area.
- Your name and phone number.
- Anything you choose to add in the notes field.
- Technical details of the request: the page you sent it from, the date and time, and, if you arrived from an advert or a tagged link, the campaign tags (UTM tags) and Google click ID that came with that link.
When you WhatsApp, call or email us
- Whatever you send us, including photos of your property or equipment, and our replies.
When you become a customer
- The details we need to plan, install, monitor or guard, such as your address, contact people and site information. Your quote or service agreement explains anything specific to that service.
When you use the website
- If you accept cookies: usage information from Google Analytics (pages viewed, device and browser type, approximate location and how you found us) and from Google Ads (whether you clicked an advert and then sent a request, called or tapped WhatsApp).
- Basic technical logs kept by our website host, such as IP address, browser type and time of visit, to keep the site secure and working.
We don't ask for ID numbers, banking details or health information on this website. Please don't put them in the notes field.
If you use our criminal background check service, the information involved can include criminal records, which POPIA treats as special personal information. We only process it with the consent and safeguards POPIA requires, and we explain how before any check starts. That service is not handled through this website.
Why we use it, and on what basis
| What we do with it | Lawful basis under POPIA (section 11) |
|---|---|
| Reply to your enquiry, arrange a site visit and prepare your quote | Steps you've asked us to take before a contract |
| Install, monitor, maintain and support your security if you become a customer | Carrying out our contract with you |
| Keep records that the law requires, such as tax records | Complying with the law |
| Measure how the website and our adverts perform | Your consent, given through the cookie banner |
| Keep the website secure and stop spam and fake requests | Our legitimate interest in running a safe website |
We don't sell your personal information. We won't send you marketing messages unless you've agreed to receive them, and you can ask us to stop at any time.
Cookies and similar technology
When you first visit, a banner asks whether you accept analytics and advertising cookies. Your choice is saved in your browser so we don't ask on every page.
- If you accept: Google Analytics and Google Ads set cookies to measure visits and to tell us when an advert led to a quote request or a call.
- If you decline: no analytics or advertising cookies are set. Under Google's consent mode, Google may still receive basic signals without cookies, such as that a page was viewed or a request was sent. Google uses these in aggregate and they don't use cookies to recognise you.
The site also uses your browser's session storage, which is cleared when you close the tab. It remembers how you arrived (campaign tags and Google click ID) so they can be attached to your quote request, and it keeps the WhatsApp message you just created so the thank-you page can reopen it if WhatsApp didn't open.
You can change your mind at any time by clearing this site's cookies and storage in your browser, after which the banner will ask again. You can also use Google's opt-out browser add-on. Google explains how it uses information from sites like ours at policies.google.com.
Information stored outside South Africa
Some of the services above, such as Google, WhatsApp and our website host, may store information on servers outside South Africa. We only use providers that are bound by data protection laws or agreements that give protection substantially similar to POPIA, as section 72 of POPIA requires.
How long we keep it
- Quote requests that don't lead to work: up to 12 months, in case you come back to us, and then we delete them.
- Customer records: while you're a customer, and afterwards for as long as the law requires, for example for tax purposes.
- Website analytics: no longer than the retention period set in our Google Analytics account, which is 14 months at most.
We may keep information longer if the law requires it or if it's needed for a legal claim. When we no longer need it, we delete it or make sure it can't identify you.
How we protect it
- Only the owners and staff who need your information can see it.
- The website runs over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, and the quote form has spam protection.
- The providers we use are required to keep information secure.
If we believe your personal information has been accessed by someone without authority, we'll tell you and the Information Regulator as POPIA requires.
Your rights
Under POPIA you have the right to:
- ask whether we hold personal information about you, and for a copy of it;
- ask us to correct or delete information that is wrong, out of date, incomplete or that we shouldn't have;
- object to us using your information, including for direct marketing;
- withdraw your consent, for example to analytics cookies, at any time;
- complain to the Information Regulator.
Contact our Information Officer to use any of these rights. We may need to confirm who you are before we act on a request. The Information Regulator publishes standard forms for objections (Form 1) and for correction or deletion requests (Form 2) on its POPIA forms page, but you don't have to use them to contact us.
