Area Fourways

Security company in Fourways for estates and complexes

Fourways grew up around estates and complexes, so security here works on two levels: the shared gate the HOA is responsible for, and your own home inside it. We quote both.

Short answer

DBS Security supplies estate guarding, biometric access control, CCTV and criminal background checks to estates, complexes, HOAs and body corporates in Fourways, Lonehill, Douglasdale and Broadacres, and fits alarms for residents inside them. The family-run, PSIRA-registered company (468853) is based in Horizon View, Roodepoort. Owners Pieter and Marco de Bruyn quote every job.

What Fourways properties need most

Every property is different. These are the layers we're asked about most in Fourways, and why.

Estate security

Estates and complexes run by HOAs and body corporates need guards at the gate who follow a written procedure for residents, visitors, deliveries and contractors.

Alarm systems

The estate wall and guards cover the perimeter, not your front door. Residents inside estates still need their own alarm, linked to 24-hour monitoring.

Fourways is estate and complex country

Fourways takes its name from the four-way stop where William Nicol Drive and Witkoppen Road once met. The land was a family farm that was sold off piece by piece, and in the decades since it has become one of the fastest-developing commercial and residential areas in northern Johannesburg. Much of that growth has been in estates and complexes: some built around golf courses, others around parks and family living, alongside townhouse complexes and apartment blocks in suburbs such as Lonehill. Fourways Mall and Montecasino make it a busy commercial node as well.

That shapes how security works here. In a suburb of freestanding homes, each owner looks after their own wall and gate. In an estate or complex, the perimeter and the gate are shared, run by an HOA or body corporate, and your own home sits inside it. Both levels need attention, and they need different things.

For HOAs, trustees and managing agents

Trustees are responsible for a gate they can't stand at themselves. So a security quote for an estate or complex should be easy to check, not only competitive. When you compare providers, including us, ask each one to put these in writing:

AreaWhat to get in writing
Gate procedureHow residents, visitors, deliveries and contractors are let in, and what guards do when someone can't be verified.
GuardsThat every guard is PSIRA-registered, how leave and public holidays are covered, and who supervises them.
CamerasWhich cameras cover the entrance and exit, whether they capture number plates and faces at night, and who checks they're still recording.
Access controlHow residents and staff get through pedestrian gates, and how access is removed when someone moves out or leaves a job.
Staff and contractorsWhether people who work inside the estate are vetted before they get access, and with whose consent.
ReportingHow incidents are reported to the trustees, and how quickly.

We quote estate security after a site visit, and our proposal is in writing so the trustees can compare it line by line. Pieter or Marco stays your contact, not a call centre.

The gate is where most of the work is

An estate wall can be high and well fenced, but every resident, visitor, delivery and contractor comes through the gate. That makes the gate the part of an estate's security that needs the most care. Three things make the biggest difference:

  • Clear entrance cameras. Cameras placed to capture number plates and faces, with lighting that works at night, and someone checking they're still recording.
  • Biometric access. Fingerprint access at pedestrian gates and staff entrances can't be lent to someone else like a remote or a card, and it leaves a record of who came in and when.
  • Vetted staff. Criminal background checks on domestic workers, gardeners and regular contractors before they're given access. The person being checked has to consent, and we'll explain what that involves.

Inside the estate: your own home

Living behind an estate gate doesn't mean anyone is watching your front door. The estate's guards and cameras cover the perimeter and the entrance. What happens inside your own walls is up to you.

For residents we usually suggest an alarm with outdoor beams on the garden and patio, linked to 24-hour off-site monitoring, a camera at your front door and driveway, and a garage door motor so you can drive straight in. The same applies in a townhouse complex: the body corporate's wall and gate are shared, but your unit is yours to secure. Check your estate's or complex's rules first, as some limit where cameras and beams can be mounted. If you're away often, monitoring means someone is keeping an eye on the house while it's empty.

FAQ Questions we get

Security in Fourways: questions people ask

Something else on your mind? WhatsApp Marco or call the office on 011 768 0400.

Do you quote HOAs and body corporates in Fourways?

Yes. We quote guarding, gate procedures, entrance cameras, biometric access and staff vetting for estates and complexes. Pieter or Marco visits the site, and the proposal comes in writing so the trustees can compare it with what they have now.

I live in an estate with guards. Do I still need my own alarm?

In most cases, yes. Estate guards and cameras watch the perimeter and the gate, not your doors and windows. An alarm with outdoor beams, linked to 24-hour off-site monitoring, covers your own home. Check your estate's rules on where you may mount equipment first.

Can you vet contractors and domestic staff for our complex?

Yes. Criminal background checks are one of our services. The person being checked has to give consent, and we'll explain what the check involves before you start. An HOA can make vetting part of its gate procedure for regular staff and contractors.

Which Fourways areas do you cover?

We cover Fourways, Lonehill, Douglasdale, Broadacres, Craigavon, Magaliessig, Witkoppen and Dainfern. Our office is in Horizon View, Roodepoort, south-west of Fourways. If your area isn't listed, WhatsApp Marco and ask.
